Construction of the compound wall surrounding Badavi Linga Temple in Hampi, which commenced ten days ago, was halted on Monday due to strong opposition from the local community.
The Archaeological Survey of India and the Hampi World Heritage Area Management Authority (HWHAMA) have initiated the construction of a compound wall. However, in response, the locals have organized a protest upon observing the excavation work surrounding the temple. They have expressed concerns about the unscientific nature of the project and its potential adverse effects on the pristine charm of the Hampi monuments.
The locals organized a protest when they noticed digging happening around the temple. They objected to the construction of the compound wall, stating that it was not done scientifically and would harm the natural beauty of the monuments in Hampi.
Following a cylinder blast near Virupaksha temple in Hampi, UNESCO has reportedly directed ASI officials to provide a report regarding unauthorized constructions in the area. Raghavendra Bhat, a Hampi resident, has claimed that the guidelines set by UNESCO for safeguarding heritage sites and monuments have been repeatedly violated. Bhat further alleges that both ASI and HWHAMA officials have failed to take necessary action to halt unscientific developments, such as the establishment of an open museum, hotels, and homestays on the premises of Ugra Narasimha Swamy temple.
