TB Dam Sees Rise in Inflow, Bringing Hope to Farmers

After weeks of uncertainty, the Tungabhadra Dam has started receiving increased inflows following rainfall across its upper catchment areas. The rise in water levels has renewed optimism among thousands of farmers in the command regions of Vijayanagara, Koppal, Ballari and neighbouring districts, who depend on the reservoir for irrigation.

According to officials, rainfall in the catchment areas has significantly improved inflow into the reservoir, resulting in a steady rise in storage levels. While the reservoir is still expected to receive additional inflows during the peak monsoon period, the current trend has eased immediate concerns over water availability for agriculture.

For farmers, the increase comes as a major relief. Many had delayed sowing operations or remained uncertain about water availability due to the slow start to the monsoon. With inflows improving, confidence has grown that irrigation requirements for the ongoing agricultural season can be met if rainfall continues over the coming weeks.

Agriculture in the Tungabhadra command area supports the cultivation of paddy, cotton, maize, sugarcane and several horticultural crops. Water availability from the reservoir plays a decisive role in determining crop planning and overall agricultural productivity across large parts of north Karnataka.

Farmers, however, remain cautiously optimistic. They point out that while the recent inflow has improved the situation, sustained rainfall is essential to ensure adequate storage for the entire season and for any decision regarding water supply for additional crop cycles later in the year.

Water resource officials continue to monitor inflows on a daily basis and will review storage levels before taking decisions on irrigation releases. Experts note that consistent monsoon activity across the Tungabhadra basin will be crucial in building comfortable reservoir levels.

The Tungabhadra Dam remains one of Karnataka’s most important irrigation lifelines, supplying water to lakhs of acres of farmland besides supporting drinking water needs, industries and hydroelectric power generation. Every increase in inflow is therefore closely watched by farmers, administrators and residents across the region.

With monsoon activity expected to continue, the coming weeks will determine whether the reservoir can accumulate enough storage to comfortably meet agricultural and domestic water demands. For now, the rising inflows have brought renewed confidence and hope to farming communities awaiting a successful monsoon season.
