Three youths have been booked by the police after they allegedly created and shared social media reels featuring fake firearms in a public place, sparking concern among viewers and prompting swift police action. Authorities said the videos had the potential to create fear and panic despite the weapons being replicas. According to the police, the incident took place on the banks of the HLC canal near Bandihatti village in Ballari. The youths were seen carrying what appeared to be a double-barrel gun and a pistol while recording videos intended for social media platforms.
Although the firearms were later confirmed to be fake, officials said the visuals could easily be mistaken for real weapons by the public. Based on the viral videos, the Cowl Bazaar Police registered a case against the three individuals. Police said such content can create unnecessary alarm, disturb public peace and encourage irresponsible behaviour among other social media users.
Officials have appealed to youngsters and content creators to use social media responsibly and avoid producing videos that depict criminal or dangerous activities merely to gain online attention. They warned that even the use of imitation weapons in public spaces can invite legal action if it causes fear or misleads the public.
Police also urged citizens to think carefully before creating or sharing sensational content online, stressing that social media popularity should never come at the cost of public safety or law and order.
