Hampi, renowned for its cultural and historical significance, is taking a decisive stance against unauthorized resorts and hotels in its vicinity. In a resolute move, authorities are now forging ahead with the establishment of a dedicated task force aimed at addressing the prevailing irregularities within the hospitality sector. As a pivotal component of this comprehensive strategy, the task force will launch its own exclusive helpline to efficiently gather crucial information concerning illicit constructions.
In the past couple of years, a significant number of 30 buildings on Virupura Gaddi island and approximately 70 establishments, including hotels, resorts, and restaurants in Koppal and Vijayanagara districts, have been dismantled by the authorities.
According to authorities, despite the ongoing efforts to demolish illegal constructions, some resort owners persist in erecting temporary structures. In two notable instances, it was discovered that after demolition, these owners repurposed small sections of their homes into rental rooms, targeting foreign travelers and overcharging them.
An official stated that the upcoming task force will actively monitor such activities and work towards discouraging the construction of new structures within the Hampi heritage area and its adjacent buffer zone. Additionally, the authorities have already identified an alternative location in the Koppal district to accommodate the resorts and hotels that were recently demolished.
A resort owner expressed disappointment, stating that the current situation is disheartening. They highlighted the increasing pressure from tourists on one hand, while the government continues with demolition activities that are perceived as being against the community’s best interests. The resort owner called for a policy-based approach from the authorities instead of relying solely on structure removal as a solution.
Another resort owner from Sanapur in Koppal expressed their perspective, emphasizing that the local community is an integral part of the area and should not be treated as criminals. They acknowledged the importance of adhering to legal regulations but also called for compassion and understanding. The resort owner stressed the need to redefine the concept of heritage, as they observed larger resorts and buildings being developed while smaller huts are being demolished. They emphasized that people cannot live in constant fear regarding the uncertain fate of their businesses.
