The national flag was hoisted successfully on the 405-foot flagpole at Dr. Puneeth Rajkumar District Stadium in Hosapete on Independence Day this year, with no reported technical malfunction during the ceremony. The successful hoisting marks a notable change from previous occasions when the city’s towering flagpole had encountered technical problems during national-day celebrations.
The 405-foot structure at the stadium was originally planned as one of Hosapete’s major landmarks. When it was commissioned, the flagpole was described as India’s tallest, with a height of about 123 metres. A ₹6 crore project funded through the Tourism Department was undertaken for its installation. The flagpole was designed to carry a 120-by-80-foot national flag.
However, the flagpole later became associated with repeated technical difficulties. During the Republic Day celebrations on January 26, 2025, the national flag being raised on the pole unexpectedly fell, prompting officials to announce action over the incident. Reports noted that the flag-hoisting mechanism uses a 3.5 HP motor and a specially designed polymer-coated high-tensile steel rope.
The following Independence Day, in August 2025, the flag could not be hoisted on the 405-foot pole because of technical issues. District in-charge minister B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan instead hoisted the national flag on a smaller pole at the stadium.
Against this backdrop, this year’s ceremony was closely watched. The flag was raised on the 405-foot structure as scheduled, and the hoisting was completed without the technical glitches that had marred previous attempts.
The smooth operation of the mechanism this year provides a welcome development for the district, particularly after the problems witnessed during the 2025 Republic Day and Independence Day events.
The Hosapete flagpole remains one of the city’s most prominent landmarks, visible from considerable distances across the city. It was originally conceived not only as a symbol of patriotism but also as an attraction that would add to Hosapete’s tourism identity alongside Hampi and the Tungabhadra reservoir.
For Hosapete, this Independence Day therefore offered something that had been missing in recent celebrations: the 405-foot tricolour rising smoothly on the city’s iconic flagpole, without a repeat of the technical failures of previous years.
