Late-night ATM robbery attempt thwarted by quick-acting Ballari officers

In a swift and courageous response, Ballari police, led by Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mallikarjuna, apprehended a suspect red-handed during an attempted ATM robbery in Brucepet during the early hours of Tuesday. The dramatic incident unfolded near Kalamma Circle and was fully captured on CCTV, showcasing the officers’ bravery.

The accused, identified as Venkatesh, a resident of Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh, was caught trying to steal the cash box from an Axis Bank ATM kiosk. Acting on precise intelligence, ASI Mallikarjuna confronted Venkatesh mid-act, sparking a tense and at times violent struggle. Despite being taken by surprise, the suspect resisted fiercely, even attempting to attack the officer in a desperate bid to flee.

Undeterred, ASI Mallikarjuna engaged in a physical tussle to restrain the accused. Witnesses later described the scene as “nothing short of a circus act” as the officer wrestled to subdue him. Recognizing the danger, the ASI quickly called for backup. Constable Ningappa arrived promptly and assisted in overpowering and tying up the suspect before he was taken into custody.

The CCTV footage of the incident, highlighting the ASI’s fearless confrontation, has gone viral, earning widespread praise for the officers’ quick thinking and courage.

Ballari Superintendent of Police Dr. Shobharani lauded the team’s swift action, stating, “This is an exemplary display of bravery and alertness. The officers prevented a major theft and protected public property through their dedication.”

Police have placed Venkatesh in custody and are investigating his possible involvement in other thefts across the region. Authorities say the case underscores the critical role of vigilant night patrols in preventing crime and safeguarding public assets.
