₹308 Crore allocated for Hospet’s drinking water plan

The Karnataka Mining Region Environmental Rehabilitation Corporation (KMERC) has sanctioned a ₹308.93 crore plan to secure drinking water supply for Hospet city and nearby villages until 2055.

To utilize water from the dead storage in the Tungabhadra reservoir, a separate jack well will be built near the Pavagada project jack well. Additionally, a large tank will be constructed atop the hill near the TB Dam’s second treatment plant on the highway side, alongside another treatment plant. Water will be distributed to all city overhead tanks via gravity.

“During my tenure as Municipal Commissioner, I submitted a detailed project report to KMERC. Initially, we expected 80% of the cost (₹250 crore) to be covered, but the full project cost has now been approved. Survey work will commence soon, with KUIDFC expected to call for tenders within four months. The project should be completed within two years,” stated Manohar, project director of the district urban development cell, in a conversation with reporters.

With the city’s population expected to grow from 2.91 lakh to 5.50 lakh by 2055, this plan has been designed accordingly. The tank and water purification plant will be established on a 10-acre revenue land near TB Dam. The chosen location allows for smooth water flow to all tanks without the need for pumping. However, there are no plans to improve the household water supply system at this time.

₹10 Crore Project Reinforced

A ₹10 crore project to increase the capacity of the second water treatment plant at TB Dam, which supplies 70% of the city’s water, is underway. This project includes rehabilitating the treatment plant and replacing the existing pipeline from the Tungabhadra Reservoir. Although the TB Dam (27 MLD) and Chittawadgi (11 MLD) plants are supposed to supply 38 MLD, only 32 MLD is currently being provided. This revitalization work aims to restore full capacity.

New Tank Locations

Six overhead tanks with a capacity of 10 lakh liters each and four overhead tanks with a capacity of 5 lakh liters each will be constructed. The 10 lakh liter tanks will be located at Asharya Colony, Kariganur, Vivekananda Barangay, Malapanagudi Road, PK Halli Road, and Hosur Road. The 5 lakh liter tanks will be located at KEB Quarters, Anantashayanagudi, Ingalagi Road, and Nagenahalli.
