Kudligi to Get Japanese-style Miyawaki Forest as Nirmala Sitharaman Launches Green Initiative

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched the Bharat Vann Yojana, an ambitious afforestation initiative aimed at increasing green cover and promoting environmental conservation across the region. As part of the programme, a Japanese-style Miyawaki forest will be developed in Kudligi, while large-scale tree plantation drives will be undertaken with the participation of local communities, educational institutions, government agencies and various organisations. The minister also called for environmental protection to become a people’s movement, stressing the need for collective action to safeguard natural resources for future generations.

Addressing a gathering during the launch, Sitharaman emphasised that environmental conservation cannot be achieved through government efforts alone and requires active public participation. She urged citizens, students, farmers and community groups to take ownership of tree plantation and maintenance activities to ensure long-term ecological benefits.

The Bharat Vann Yojana aims to enhance biodiversity, improve ecological balance and strengthen climate resilience through widespread plantation of native tree species. The initiative is expected to create greener landscapes while contributing to soil conservation, improved air quality and groundwater recharge.

A major highlight of the programme is the proposed Miyawaki forest in Kudligi. Developed using the afforestation technique pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, the method involves planting a dense mix of native species in a compact area. Such forests grow significantly faster than conventional plantations and become self-sustaining within a few years, creating rich ecosystems that support biodiversity.

Sitharaman noted that environmental challenges such as climate change, deforestation and depletion of natural resources require sustained efforts from all sections of society. She stressed the importance of nurturing and protecting saplings after plantation, stating that the success of any afforestation programme depends on the survival and growth of trees over the long term.

The initiative is expected to bring together government departments, local bodies, educational institutions, voluntary organisations and residents to create a lasting green legacy in the region. With the Miyawaki forest project and large-scale plantation drives, the Bharat Vann Yojana seeks to serve as a model for community-driven environmental conservation and sustainable development.
