A public convention held by the Ballari Nagarika Horata Samithi (BNHS) at Gandhi Bhavan on Sunday brought longstanding civic issues to the forefront, calling for immediate attention and resolution.
The gathering spotlighted major grievances such as the need for clean drinking water, proper underground drainage, road repairs, and control of stray dogs and cattle.
Inaugurating the event, senior advocate R. Pandu pointed out that Article 21 of the Constitution guarantees the right to live with dignity, a right clearly denied to Ballari residents.
“Contaminated water is supplied once in 8–10 days, roads are crumbling, and pollution is on the rise. The municipal body appears more interested in collecting taxes than solving these problems. We are not asking for a city like London or Paris, we just want clean air, clean water, and decent roads,” he said.
BNHS district advisor Narasanna noted, “A country is built on its people, not just its land or borders. Looking at Ballari’s civic condition, one wonders if this is forgotten. Despite all the Swachh Bharat slogans, our streets remain dirty. What’s the point of a municipal corporation if it can’t address basic issues?”
BNHS advisor and retired inspector Murtuza Saab, who coordinated month-long preparations, shared that over one lakh signatures have been collected in support of these demands.
“This has already compelled the authorities to take up a few minor works. This is the strength of public movements,” he said, urging citizens to stay involved.
Chairing the meeting, BNHS district coordinator R. Somashekhar Gowda stated that instead of resolving problems, the municipal body is creating new ones.
“People must form local committees and push back. Struggle is the only way,” he said.
BNHS advisor and industrialist Shyamsundar, along with executive members N. Pramod and A. Shanta, also addressed the attendees.
Details of civic problems in different localities and possible solutions were discussed. A 47-member action committee was formed to lead future efforts, with a memorandum set to be submitted to the Mayor on Wednesday.
The event saw active participation from several resident welfare associations and concerned citizens across Ballari.
