The Tungabhadra Reservoir, Vijayanagara a crucial water source for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, is just three feet shy of reaching full capacity. Last year, due to a severe lack of rainfall, the reservoir remained unfilled, causing difficulties for farmers in the Achkattu area. This year, however, they are pleased with the ample rain.
The Tungabhadra Reservoir currently holds 93.463 TMC of water, against its total capacity of 105.788 TMC, with the water level at 1630 feet out of 1633 feet. The reservoir supplies water to 3.5 lakh hectares across the Raichur, Bellary, Koppal, and Vijayanagar districts. Last year’s insufficient rainfall allowed only one crop to be grown, with just 21.36 TMC collected by this time, and the dam ultimately only reached 89 TMC.

Outflow Details | 14,791 Cusecs | 213 Cusecs | 12,863 Cusecs |
As of Monday, inflows were recorded at 85,148 cusecs, while outflows were at 15,159 cusecs.
54 TMC in 6 Days
Thanks to continuous heavy rains in the Tungabhadra basin, the dam’s inflow exceeded 1 lakh cusecs over the past week. This increased the water storage from 30 TMC on July 13 to 39.72 TMC on July 17, reaching 93.463 TMC by July 23. Consequently, the 15th, 16th, and 17th gates have been opened, releasing 3,987 cusecs of water into the river. Additionally, water is being channeled to both lower and upper-level canals.
104 TMC in 2022
In 2022, the reservoir stored 98 TMC of water by July 12, prompting the release of water through 12 crest gates. By July 23, the reservoir had filled to 104.50 TMC, with an inflow of 50,000 cusecs and an outflow of 16,000 cusecs. However, in 2023, water levels had to be closely monitored and managed due to inadequate rainfall.
