Renuka Poojary, a resident of Kurugodu in Ballari district, has made history by becoming the first transgender individual in Karnataka to be appointed as a part-time Kannada professor at the Nandihalli Postgraduate Centre of Vijayanagara Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Ballari.
Renuka’s appointment was facilitated by Bellary University Registrar S.N. Rudresh, who encouraged and guided her to apply for the position. Renuka, who currently serves as a part-time assistant professor, shared her dream of pursuing a PhD and continuing her academic journey.
Renuka’s achievement highlights the transformative power of education in overcoming societal and personal challenges. She has excelled academically, securing 70% marks throughout her SSLC, PUC, undergraduate, and postgraduate studies.
Originally known as Mallesh K., Renuka underwent natural physical changes while pursuing her graduate studies, which marked her journey as a transgender woman. Despite facing obstacles, including the delay in her NEET exam results due to not being considered under third-gender reservation by UGC, she remains determined to fight for her rightful recognition.
Renuka’s story is a significant milestone in Karnataka’s higher education system. While three transgender women are employed as schoolteachers across the state, Renuka’s appointment marks the first instance of a transgender person achieving the position of professor at a university.
Her perseverance and academic dedication make her a role model for society, inspiring others to pursue their dreams despite adversity.
