There is a misconception among the public that helmets are not necessary in Bellary due to the intense heat, but there is no exemption from wearing them, clarified District Superintendent of Police Dr. Shobharani V.J.
Addressing the media on Friday, she stated, “Accidents are occurring in the district due to overspeeding and drunk driving. To raise awareness, we are distributing helmets and have issued a circular to citizens, police personnel, and colleges mandating helmet use. This rule will be strictly implemented in phases.”
She further said, “Our efforts are focused on reducing accidents and fatalities. We are addressing road issues, currently, a study is underway in Sandur. Based on the report, necessary road improvements will be made. Speed governors are being installed in lorries, and speed controllers in buses. Now, helmets are compulsory for two-wheeler riders. Many recent accident deaths were caused by head injuries, prompting this enforcement.”
Dr. Shobharani added that traffic violation cases are being booked without leniency, and as a result, accidents have seen a decline this year. “We will continue this strict enforcement. Police and journalists must also comply with the helmet rule, failing which a ₹500 fine will be imposed,” she warned.
In 2024, the district saw 6,557 helmetless riding cases, while 2,655 cases have been recorded in 2025 so far, according to police data.
