In a move set to enhance connectivity for tourists, a large launch (boat) will soon begin operations between Hampi and Anegondi via the Tungabhadra River, making it easier for visitors to reach Anjanadri.
Tourists often cut their visit to Hampi short due to time constraints and the difficulty of accessing locations like Anjanadri and the nearby elephants. With this new service, they can now travel more comfortably—alongside the elephants—in a large-capacity boat that can accommodate around 35 to 40 people.
Currently, a small boat service operates from Talawaraghat in Hampi, carrying 10–15 passengers and up to 4 bikes. However, the limited capacity and longer travel time have led to the introduction of this bigger vessel, expected to start operating within two weeks.
Boat Highlights
This vessel, brought in from Maharashtra, is capable of transporting bikes, autos, and even cars across the river in just two minutes. Following clearances from various government departments and successful trial runs, the service is set to commence shortly. Ticket rates will be decided post-tender by the local Gram Panchayat and are expected to be slightly higher due to increased maintenance costs.
“Tourists visiting Hampi and Anjanadri prefer to explore both places. Once the large boat service begins, it will be a big convenience for commuters and visitors alike,” said Gopalakrishna, owner of the Anegondi boat service.
Focus on Anjanadri Development
Tourism Minister H.K. Patil has directed officials to prioritize the development of Anjanadri. At a review meeting held near Hanumanahalli village in Gangavathi taluk, the Minister emphasized the timely completion of ongoing projects.
The Tourism Department, District Administration, and executing agency have been instructed to complete the residential complex in Anjanadri by December 15 and the cable car project by March 31. The Minister warned against any further delays.
Key works include:
- Renovation of the temple (₹14 crore)
- ₹5 crore each for Ramayana-themed sound and light shows, and a VIP guest house
- A community hall, road and footpath upgrades, and four viewing telescopes for Hampi (₹3 crore)
- Theme-based stairways (₹15 crore each for front and rear sides)
- Facilities like kitchen, dining hall, stage, drinking water, and toilets (₹10 crore)
- A circular path (₹8 crore)
Considering the challenge of reaching the hilltop temple only by ropeway or cable car, an escalator is also being planned.
