Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) is set to establish ground-mounted solar power projects at its three thermal power stations—Ballari (BTPS), Yermarus (YTPS), and Raichur (RTPS)—with a total capacity of 100.1 MW. The initiative, aimed at enhancing renewable energy capacity, comes at an estimated cost of ₹411.4 crore.
Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC), a PSU under NTPC, has floated a tender for the project. A private entity will execute the development under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model, with a three-year completion timeline.
KPCL sees this as a step toward balancing energy generation. “We have available land near these thermal plants, making it feasible to install solar cells. This will allow us to reduce thermal generation during peak solar hours, optimizing fuel consumption and costs,” said Gaurav Gupta, KPCL MD and Additional Chief Secretary, Energy Department.
Green Hydrogen Pilot at BTPS
Additionally, Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited (KREDL) has invited tenders for a 300 kW green hydrogen plant at BTPS, coupled with a ground-mounted solar plant, at an estimated cost of ₹13.08 crore. The selected private firm will handle installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance for 10 years.
KPCL will utilize the green hydrogen for in-house technical applications at BTPS. “This pilot project will help us integrate green hydrogen into our operations,” Gupta added.
With Karnataka’s power demand rising—peaking at 18,224 MW on February 4 and expected to surpass 19,000 MW this summer—the Energy Department is actively working on sustainable capacity expansion.
