The Karnataka government has nominated Hampi, Mysuru, and Lakkundi under the Centre’s Global Destination Development Scheme, with one site set to receive funding for heritage conservation, tourism infrastructure, and visitor facilities. The Union government will select one destination in each state of the country, and the chosen site will receive Rs 500 crore in phases for development in tourism infrastructure, amenities, sanitation, digital services, management of the destination, and conservation of the heritage. The scheme aims to develop one landmark destination in every state through integrated infrastructure, heritage conservation, improved visitor amenities, and tourism promotion, positioning these sites as globally competitive attractions while generating local employment and economic growth.
The destinations were chosen because they attract more than 50,000 visitors annually and already enjoy significant national and international visibility, making them strong contenders for the Centre’s destination development initiative. The Hampi circuit, with its history and the ruins of the Vijayanagara empire, has gained international attention, and Mysuru, with the internationally recognised Mysuru Palace and other attractions, has also remained a popular choice of tourists. Lakkundi in Gadag, known for its Kalyana Chalukya-era temples, stepped wells, and intricate stone architecture, has long been regarded by conservationists as one of Karnataka’s most under-promoted heritage destinations.
According to Ram Prasath Manohar, Commissioner of the Tourism Department, “The government is strongly putting up proposals to make either of the three an international destination. We will also mobilise resources locally to attract tourists. The Centre is finalising the draft guidelines for development schemes in the destinations. Once it is finalised, one of the destinations will be chosen.” The tourism officials, along with bringing in luxury stays, are also planning for budget stays to boost tourism for all.
