The state government asserts that it is extending various guarantees to assist the people, but these guarantees are hampering development in several regions, making it challenging to operate various government departments and universities. A notable example of this is the financial crisis faced by Kannada University Hampi, primarily due to insufficient funding for current expenses, property tax, and water bills.
This year, the university has only received 1.5 crores out of the allocated 5 crores in grants, exacerbating its financial woes. The university lacks the funds to cover current expenses, property taxes, and water bills, prompting municipal authorities in Kamalapur to issue a notice for outstanding dues amounting to 90 lakhs for current bills and 50 lakhs for property tax.
Kannada University Hampi was established three decades ago with the mission of fostering Kannada Nadu literature. Spanning hundreds of acres, this university serves as an ideal hub for research scholars, writers, and the preservation and enrichment of the Kannada cultural heritage. However, at present, the university finds itself in dire financial straits.
The university’s predicament has left Kannada enthusiasts discontented, especially during the 50th anniversary celebrations of Karnataka, where the sole institution dedicated to the advancement of Kannada faces difficulties. To address the current bill issue, the university plans to gradually clear the outstanding 90 lakhs at a rate of 10 lakhs per month in response to JESCOM’s insistence.
Meanwhile, Vijayanagar’s in-charge minister, Jameer, has penned a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, seeking an additional grant of 9.21 crore rupees for Kannada University. Furthermore, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is scheduled to visit Hampi, offering the governing body an opportunity to elucidate the financial challenges confronting Kannada University.
The Kannada Nadu water issue remains non-negotiable, and it is incumbent on all of us to safeguard the Kannada language and culture. The entire Kannada community urges Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to rescue the solitary Kannada university from its financial tribulations.
