Hampi, Karnataka witnessed the successful conclusion of the third gathering of G20 Sherpas, led by the esteemed Indian G20 Sherpa, Shri Amitabh Kant. Bringing together more than 120 delegates from G20 member nations, invitee countries, and prominent international and regional organizations, this momentous event served as the backdrop for the collaborative crafting and co-creation of the Leaders Declaration. Hampi, a city of rich historical significance and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, provided the perfect setting for this important milestone. The outcomes of this gathering are poised to make a significant impact on the global stage.

Under the Indian Presidency’s guidance, the G20 members diligently participated in three intensive days of negotiations, aiming to foster transformative and action-oriented initiatives that embody the spirit of unity in our global family. Throughout this period, Sherpas and Heads of Delegations collaborated wholeheartedly to develop a draft of the Leaders Declaration, which encapsulates the shared determination of G20 nations to drive progress on crucial global matters. The draft text emphasizes the prioritization of sustainable development and the resolution to address pressing challenges, covering six key areas, namely the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), green development, reforms within multilateral development banks (MDBs), digital public infrastructure, gender equality, and the integration of outcomes from various working groups. This remarkable effort demonstrates the G20’s unwavering commitment to building a better future for all.

With a focus on developmental objectives, the Indian Presidency of the G20 is steadfast in its commitment to upholding the forum’s identity and principles as a platform that unites developed and emerging economies. As a result, the sessions witnessed active participation from member nations, invited countries, and international organizations, all driven by the shared goal of formulating an inclusive, ambitious, resolute, and action-oriented New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration. This significant document is set to be endorsed at the upcoming Summit in September 2023, reflecting the collective dedication of the G20 to address global challenges and pave the way for a brighter future.

Under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Indian Presidency of the G20 has taken a historic step towards inclusivity by proposing the membership of the African Union within the G20. This significant initiative aims to enhance representation and amplify the voices of emerging countries and the global south within the G20 forum. With 55 member nations, the African Union’s admission would bring forth diverse perspectives and bolster the G20’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable global dialogue. This move reflects the Indian Presidency’s unwavering dedication to promoting a truly representative and impactful G20 community.

In addition to formal discussions, the G20 Sherpas also actively participated in informal gatherings known as “sofa talks,” where they furthered the G20 agenda and fostered deeper cooperation and understanding on shared concerns. During the three-day event, the Indian Presidency conducted fruitful bilateral discussions with numerous delegations, contributing to the productive atmosphere.

The G20 has reiterated its unwavering dedication to collaborating and addressing global challenges with a particular focus on areas such as development and growth, climate change, and Lifestyles for Sustainable Development. The group is committed to taking strong collective action to tackle these pressing issues. To facilitate ongoing progress, a series of inter-sessional meetings will be conducted leading up to the fourth Sherpa meeting, scheduled for early September, which will be followed by the highly anticipated Leaders’ Summit.
