A fifth maternal death within a month has been reported at the government-run Ballari hospital. The latest case involved Sumaya from Kudligi, who passed away on Thursday.
Admitted on November 11, Sumaya underwent a cesarean section the same day. Following complications post-surgery, she was moved to the Intensive Care Unit at Ballari Medical College and Research Centre (BMCRC), where she remained for 24 days.
BMCRC Director T. Gangadhara Gouda confirmed that the patient succumbed to multi-organ failure around 8 p.m. on Thursday, despite extensive medical efforts to save her.
Newborn Death Reported
In a separate incident at BMCRC, a newborn also died on Thursday. While the infant’s family blamed medical negligence, hospital authorities refuted the allegations.
