Ballari’s jeans industry sees 30% boost amid Bangladesh crisis

The ongoing political unrest in Bangladesh has turned into an unexpected opportunity for the jeans industry in Ballari, Karnataka. Once one of the world’s largest jeans exporters, Bangladesh’s industry has been significantly affected in recent months, resulting in a 30% increase in business for Ballari’s jeans manufacturing units.

Industry experts note that top Indian brands, which previously relied on Bangladesh for jeans, are now shifting their focus to Ballari, often referred to as India’s “jeans capital.”

Data reveals that following the crisis in Bangladesh, each unit in Ballari has been earning monthly profits ranging from ₹5 to ₹10 lakh. With over 500 units in and around the city, Ballari products, traditionally purchased by traders in Mumbai and Surat, are now drawing interest from international brands.

Pollux Mallikarjun, owner of Pollux Jeans and a member of the Ballari Jeans Industry Welfare Association, highlighted the global reach of the local industry. “The crisis in Bangladesh has led to a significant rise in demand for our products. This shows how global developments can directly impact our industry,” he said.

Mallikarjun added that major international brands have been placing bulk orders since September, prompting him to expand his workforce to meet delivery deadlines.

Sources also reported that one unit in Ballari recently secured a supply order worth ₹35 lakh, marking a promising shift in the local industry’s fortunes.
