North Karnataka gets first MEMU train on Hubballi–Hospet–Guntakal route

For the first time in North Karnataka, a MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) passenger train, previously operated only on the Bengaluru–Mysuru–Tumakuru route, has been introduced.

The South Western Railway Zone has commenced operations of the Hubballi–Hospet–Guntakal MEMU (Train No. 56911/56912) under the Hubballi Division from October 31.

Unlike conventional or DEMU trains that use both diesel and electricity, MEMU trains run entirely on electric power. They are smoke-free, environmentally friendly, and equipped with engines on both ends and the middle, reducing downtime for repairs. As there is no need to rotate engines at terminal stations, turnaround time is faster, ensuring better punctuality.

The train features well-equipped coaches with essential passenger amenities and a GPS-enabled announcement system for upcoming stations. It is also more economical to maintain compared to conventional trains.

The new MEMU replaces the earlier Hubballi–Guntakal conventional ICF train and will operate on the same schedule. It departs Hubballi at 7:45 am, reaches Hospet at 11 am, and Guntakal at 2:30 pm. The return journey begins at 3:30 pm from Guntakal, arriving at Hospet at 6:30 pm and Hubballi at 10:30 pm. The fare is ₹35 from Hospet to Hubballi, ₹20 to Ballari, and ₹30 to Guntakal.

The Vijayanagara Railway Users Association, which had been urging the South Western Railway for over a year to introduce a MEMU service on the Hubballi–Hospet–Ballari route, expressed gratitude to railway officials for fulfilling the request. Association President Y. Yamunesh and Secretary Mahesh Kuduthini also appealed to extend the service up to Mantralaya (Raichur) to facilitate devotees traveling from North Karnataka.
