District Superintendent of Police S. Jahnavi revealed that six people have been arrested for murdering a man to claim insurance worth ₹5.25 crore fraudulently.
The incident came to light after K. Gangadhar of Kaulpet was reported dead in a bike accident near the HLC canal on September 28. His wife, K. Sharadamma complained to the town police, following which three special teams were formed. The probe uncovered a larger conspiracy.
According to police, Gangadhar, who was battling illness and financial distress, was exploited by the accused. Despite being married, they registered his marriage with another woman, opened a bank account, and set her up as a nominee. Multiple insurance policies amounting to ₹5.25 crore were taken in his name.
When the payouts didn’t materialize as expected, the accused allegedly killed him and staged the death as an accident to claim the insurance money. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem. Further investigation into the racket is underway.
