Ballari district, which typically remains dry even through June and July, has experienced significant rainfall this May, setting a new five-year record thanks to an intense pre-monsoon spell.
While the district’s usual rainfall for May ranges between 4.50 and 5.50 cm, the previous highest in recent years was 8.07 cm in 2022. This year, however, the rainfall has surged to 10.05 cm by May 30, according to the State Disaster Management Authority. With May 31 data yet to be added, the figure is expected to rise further.
Data confirms that May recorded the highest rainfall in the last five years. In 2021, the Tauktae cyclone contributed to excess rains, and 2022 also saw above-average precipitation due to various factors. In contrast, 2023 experienced a shortfall of 18%, which led to reduced sowing activity and widespread drought. All five taluks of Ballari were declared drought-hit, prompting visits from drought relief teams.
This year, May rainfall was 45% above average, bringing an end to the prolonged dry spell and setting the stage for agricultural activities. The Meteorological Department’s forecast of excess rainfall proved accurate, with summer concluding by mid-May and heavy showers taking over.
Rice being the district’s main crop, farmers typically begin preparations post-June. But this year, due to consistent early rains, some have started a month ahead of schedule.
The abundant rainfall has also improved inflow into the Tungabhadra reservoir — the district’s vital water source — which now holds over 15 TMC of water, a stark contrast to just 3.37 TMC at the same time last year. While hopes are high for the dam to reach full capacity soon, questions remain regarding its crest gate operations.
Additionally, the district has witnessed a notable drop in temperature. Ballari, which usually sees intense heat even in June, is now recording lows of 24.2°C and highs of 31.6°C.
