More than 800 artists who performed at the ‘Karnataka Sambhrama’ event, held last November in Hampi to celebrate 50 years of the state’s formation, have yet to receive their payment.
The event, inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, promised remuneration of Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 for each six-member group. While groups from other districts received their payments promptly, those from Vijayanagara are still waiting.
Deputy Commissioner MS Divakar attributed the delay to technical issues within the Kannada and Culture Department but assured that efforts would be made to resolve the problems and expedite payments.
One artiste revealed to The New Indian Express that he has been waiting for eight months. Despite repeated assurances from officials, the promised funds have not been disbursed. The artiste, who borrowed money for performance materials, is struggling to repay the debt as the district administration has not yet addressed the issue.
