In a shocking incident, Neolithic ash mounds dating back over 5,000 years and protected by the state Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) were destroyed by private developers in Sangankallu village on the outskirts of Ballari city. The destruction, which occurred on Saturday, has sparked outrage among activists who are demanding strict action against those responsible for damaging the site without official permission.
The ash mounds, considered a major historical attraction, saw over 12,000 sqft of the area damaged. This comes despite plans by the district administration to further develop the site as a tourist destination.
The administration has since dispatched a team to inspect the damage and ordered the registration of an FIR against the developers involved.
Santosh Martin, a wildlife expert from Ballari, expressed his dismay, stating, “It is shocking to lose such a significant part of the site. Though the land ownership is with private individuals, the site was maintained by the state ASI and district authorities. The destruction stems from sheer greed.”
Martin added that a complaint was immediately lodged with senior officials, who have assured action against the culprits. “We have urged the administration to install boards highlighting the site’s importance and implement strict measures to protect it,” he said.
Meanwhile, a senior district official confirmed that the local tahsildar has been instructed to file a complaint against those responsible for the damage.
