A marathon to raise awareness about cyber fraud and drug prevention was held in the city on Sunday morning, drawing an impressive 2,630 participants, including foreign nationals. The event was flagged off by MLA H.R. Gaviyappa, with thousands gathering to take part in the initiative, which was also organized across the state.

Among the runners were a group of Swedish tourists staying in Hampi, along with citizens from other countries. More than ten foreign nationals participated in the 5 km run, showing their support for the district police department and reinforcing the importance of law enforcement in protecting Hospet and Hampi as key tourist destinations.

‘Sports and Fitness Are Essential’ – Johan from Sweden

Swedish participant Johan shared his excitement, saying, “Participating in this marathon was a fantastic experience. Initially, I thought it was a 10 km race, but I was happy to finish in 5 km and secure third place. Young people should actively engage in sports and physical activities. I am a cricket player and a huge fan of the sport.”
Spreading Awareness – Cybercrime & Drug Prevention
The marathon also served as a platform to spread awareness about cybercrime. Speaking to the participants, SP Sriharibabu B.L. warned, “With mobile phone usage increasing, cybercrimes have also escalated. A new threat called ‘digital arrest’ has emerged. Youngsters must stay alert, avoid suspicious calls, and not fall into fraudulent traps.”
He urged everyone to adopt a healthy lifestyle, saying, “Say goodbye to drugs and hello to life.” He also expressed gratitude to the thousands who took part in the marathon with unwavering enthusiasm.
Unstoppable Energy – A Marathon of Determination
Despite different running paces, every participant contributed to the marathon’s success. Vinay, who secured first place, crossed the finish line at 8:50 AM, while others completed the run at their own pace. Some jogged, others walked, but the energy and support for the cause remained strong. The last set of runners reached Sai Baba Circle by 9:30 AM, showcasing a united front in support of the police and their mission.
The event saw participation from students, teachers, Vijayanagar District Police, IRB, KSISF, and Home Guard personnel, alongside citizens who joined to show their solidarity. Senior police officials, including ASP Salim Pasha and RTO Vasant Chavan, were also present to support the initiative.
With a mix of local and international participants, the marathon became not just a race, but a powerful statement of unity and commitment to a safer society.
