Work begins to restore Tungabhadra canal in Koppal after breach

Repair work has begun following the breach in the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal near Bassapur village in Koppal taluk, with the government assuring compensation to farmers affected by crop and land damage. Authorities have launched urgent restoration efforts to reinstate the drinking water supply to the Raichur district, stating that the supply is expected to resume within two days.

The breach, reported last week, caused significant damage to nearby agricultural land. Sand and debris flooded the fields, destroying standing paddy crops and leaving farmland unfit for use. The incident also disrupted the drinking water supply to the Raichur district, raising concerns among residents dependent on the canal.

Farmers from Bassapur village initially halted repair operations by blocking vehicles and machinery brought for restoration. They demanded immediate compensation before allowing work to proceed. However, after multiple rounds of discussions over the past two days between officials, public representatives, and farmers, an agreement was reached.

With the situation resolved, repair work commenced today. As part of temporary measures, sandbags are being used to seal the breach and stabilize the canal. Officials said the canal will be temporarily restored within two days to resume water flow and ensure drinking water supply to Raichur district.

S M Boseraju, Minister for Minor Irrigation, visited the site, reviewed the damage, and held discussions with farmers and officials. Farmers raised concerns about alleged negligence in canal maintenance over the past few months, which they believe led to the breach.

The minister assured that affected farmers will receive compensation. Initial estimates indicate that around 92 farmers have suffered crop losses. The final compensation amount will be decided by the government in coordination with concerned officials and distributed accordingly. He also stated that action will be taken against those found responsible for negligence.

Officials added that while temporary repairs are underway, permanent reconstruction of the canal will follow to ensure long-term stability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
