In a major step towards preserving Karnataka’s rich cultural and historical heritage, the Vijayanagara district administration and Kannada University, Hampi, have launched an ambitious initiative to identify and digitize ancient handwritten manuscripts found across the district. The project was inaugurated under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner Kavitha S. Mannikeri and is being regarded as one of the first large-scale district-level manuscript digitization efforts in the country.
For decades, several rare manuscripts containing valuable historical, religious, literary, and cultural information have remained preserved in temples, mutts, traditional households, and private collections in villages around the Vijayanagara region. Many of these documents are now facing the threat of deterioration due to age, insects, humidity, and improper storage conditions. Through this initiative, authorities aim to protect these priceless records by digitally archiving them for future generations.
Kannada University, Hampi, has already begun the process of surveying and documenting manuscripts across different parts of the district. Experts and researchers will scan, catalog, and digitally preserve the documents to ensure safe access for historians, researchers, and students without causing damage to the fragile originals. The manuscripts are expected to include ancient Kannada literature, temple records, religious scriptures, folk traditions, and historical accounts that reflect the region’s deep cultural roots.
The initiative carries special importance because the Vijayanagara region, home to the historic city of Hampi and the legacy of the Vijayanagara Empire, has long been recognized as a center of art, literature, administration, and culture. Historians believe several undiscovered manuscripts from the empire’s era may still exist in the region, making the project significant for historical research and heritage conservation.
Officials believe the digitization drive will not only help preserve centuries-old knowledge but also bring national recognition to Vijayanagara district as a model for cultural preservation through technology.
