Following a visit by Tungabhadra Board President S.N. Pandey, a board meeting is scheduled for Hospet on November 22 or 23. At this meeting, approval for installing new gates is anticipated.
Farmers across three states rely on water from the Tungabhadra Dam reservoir, but the 45-year-old structure has aging gates that have weakened over time. When the reservoir is at capacity, the gates’ effectiveness at holding back water is reduced, prompting an upcoming meeting to discuss replacing all 33 gates.
On August 10, the 19th crust gate failed due to high water pressure, causing an emergency situation. A temporary stop-log gate has since been installed to control water flow. S.N. Pandey reviewed the reservoir’s safety, current storage, and maximum capacity in discussions with officials.
