The Karnataka government is considering a proposal to develop a new airport in the Kalyana Karnataka region to improve air connectivity for the districts of Ballari, Vijayanagara and Koppal. The plan is currently under discussion and aims to strengthen regional infrastructure while supporting tourism, trade, and overall economic growth.
Instead of constructing separate airports in each district, the government is examining the possibility of building a single airport that can serve all three districts. Officials believe that a shared facility would be more financially practical while still improving connectivity across the region.
The renewed proposal follows the failure of an earlier airport project near Ballari. Around 900 acres of land had been acquired in 2010 for the project, but the private developer responsible for the airport did not start construction. As a result, the government later cancelled the agreement.
With a fresh focus on regional connectivity, the government has now initiated steps to revisit the project. Consultants have been invited to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to assess feasibility, identify suitable locations, and evaluate the economic viability of the airport.
If developed, the airport could bring major benefits to the Kalyana Karnataka region. Ballari and Vijayanagara districts attract a large number of visitors each year, particularly to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hampi. Better air connectivity could boost tourism, support local businesses, and attract new investment.
Improved connectivity would also benefit industries in Ballari and nearby districts by making travel easier for business visitors and investors.
A final decision on the project will be taken after discussions between the state government and representatives from the three districts. These talks are expected to focus on the location, funding, and long-term economic advantages of the proposed airport.
If approved, the airport could emerge as a key infrastructure project for Kalyana Karnataka, improving the region’s connectivity with major cities across the country.
