Tension gripped Ballari city on Friday morning after a plastic bag containing meat and bones was found within the premises of the Hanuman Temple in the Nagalakeri area. The discovery raised concern among devotees and residents, leading to immediate police action and the registration of a criminal case.
Police said the temple priest noticed the parcel during the early morning hours. Preliminary findings indicate that the bag may have been thrown into the premises before his arrival. After spotting the contents, the priest informed the police, who promptly reached the spot and removed the bag. Soon after, a large number of devotees gathered at the temple, suspecting an attempt to hurt religious sentiments. The situation remained tense for some time as locals demanded strict action against those responsible. Police were deployed in and around the temple to maintain order and prevent any untoward incidents.
While several residents and devotees claimed the act was deliberate, officials said they were also examining whether the bag could have been carried inside by stray dogs. Authorities stated that the matter was under verification and that all possible angles were being investigated.
The Veera Balanjaneya Temple is an ancient place of worship that also houses idols of Lord Venkateshwara, Lord Ayyappa, and Lord Shiva. During the Vaikunta Ekadashi festival, thousands of devotees who are unable to visit Tirupati come to this temple, highlighting its religious importance.
‘Deliberate act’
Right-wing activists alleged that similar incidents had occurred earlier in Ballari district and termed the matter a serious concern. They said the temple is a major religious centre that attracts large numbers of devotees every day. BJP leaders and activists claimed that miscreants had jumped over the compound wall and thrown the bag containing meat into the premises. Although no forensic test had been conducted, they alleged the meat was suspected to be beef. Stating that the incident had deeply hurt religious sentiments, they demanded that the accused be identified and arrested within 24 hours and that strict action be taken.
Criminal case registered
Ballari Range IGP Harsha PS and ASP KP Ravikumar visited the spot and inspected the area. Speaking to the media, IGP Harsha appealed to the public to remain calm and said the incident should not be sensationalised. He confirmed that a criminal case had been registered at the Cowl Bazaar police station and assured a transparent investigation. Police continued to maintain tight security in the area as inquiries progressed.
