NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL) has floated a tender for the supply and installation of wind turbine generators (WTGs) for an 813 MW wind power project in Ballari, Karnataka. The project will span 271 locations and require a total capacity of at least 813 MW. The deadline for bid submissions is April 15, 2025.
As per the tender’s technical specifications, bidders must be manufacturers of Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) models approved in the latest Revised List of Models and Manufacturers (RLMM) issued by MNRE before the techno-commercial bid opening. The WTGs must have a minimum capacity of 3.0 MW each. Bidders must also provide UL-certified Annual Energy Production (AEP) data. Given the current high demand in the wind energy sector, the order is expected to be split among multiple firms.
Karnataka’s Wind Energy Momentum
Karnataka’s wind energy sector is seeing robust growth, with Amazon announcing investments in several projects. The company has backed a 100 MW wind farm at CleanMax Koppal in Karnataka, a 99 MW project at BluPine Solapur in Maharashtra, and a 180 MW project with JSW Energy in Dharapuram, Tamil Nadu. These developments align with India’s renewable energy objectives and are expected to create substantial construction-related employment.
With rising corporate demand for firm and dispatchable renewable energy (FDRE) and round-the-clock (RTC) power, the focus is likely to shift toward repowering older sites, where WTGs below 1 MW or even 500 kW are currently installed. Policy support in this area could enable faster deployment by minimizing delays in land acquisition and permitting.
