A resident of Jindal VV Nagar township, working as a lab technician at Jindal Sanjeevini Hospital, fell victim to an online scam, losing ₹17 lakh. The incident was reported to the Torangal police station.
The woman received a telegram message on her mobile last February, instructing her to participate in online ‘Movie Rating Marketing’. According to the fraudsters’ instructions, she was promised payment for rating movies. However, she was required to pay certain amounts to receive these payments. Trusting the process, she transferred large sums in multiple installments.
Recently, she received a message stating she had earned ₹26,42,770, but needed to pay ₹12,01,560 to access the funds. Having not received any money from previous payments, she refused and demanded a refund, but got no response from the scammers.
Additionally, the woman had taken a ₹5.50 lakh loan from the bank to purchase a plot, which was also stolen by the fraudsters. They siphoned off ₹3.62 lakh from her account and took additional bank loans in her name totaling ₹3.68 lakh, which were transferred to another bank. Her mobile was hacked, and OTPs were auto-forwarded, leading to a total loss of ₹17,02,365, as detailed in her complaint.
The Torangal police have registered an FIR against the unidentified individuals under various IPC sections.
