Cylinder shortage in Ballari & Hospet disrupts hotels, public concern grows

Ongoing unrest and war in the Middle East have disrupted the supply of commercial gas cylinders for the last four to five days, severely affecting the hotel industry in the city. With stocks of domestic cylinders also reportedly declining, concerns are growing that common people may soon face difficulties.

The United States and Israel are jointly carrying out attacks on Iran, which has responded with counterstrikes. As tensions escalate, oil supply from the Middle East to several countries has been disrupted. The impact of this distant conflict is now beginning to affect daily life locally.

At present, domestic cylinders are being supplied normally and given priority, though the booking period has reportedly been shortened. Commercial cylinder supply had been irregular over the past few days and has now come to a complete halt.

As a result, businesses dependent on commercial cylinders are facing the possibility of shutting down. Hotels, in particular, have been hit hard. Many establishments that had already stopped their night shifts due to the shortage are now preparing to close operations entirely from today.

Most hotels have recently adopted modern kitchen systems where the use of firewood or other flammable fuels is not permitted, making gas the only option for cooking. Owners operating such kitchens are left with little choice but to shut down. A few hotels still have wood-fired stoves, but only limited food items can be prepared with them. Items such as dosa may become scarce, and there are concerns that food prices in hotels could also rise.

If the situation continues, both business owners and workers in the hotel sector may face serious livelihood challenges.

“We had already stopped one shift due to the shortage of cylinders. Now we are left with no option but to close the hotel completely. If this continues, it will be very difficult for everyone depending on this business,” Naveen, hotel entrepreneur, Ballari

“There is currently no issue with domestic cylinder supply. Commercial cylinder supply had been irregular for a few days and has now stopped. We also have no information about when new stock will arrive.” Narasimha, gas agency owner, Ballari

Cut-off box – Message from companies
Cylinder supply companies have been sending messages to customers to address concerns. They state that rumors about a fuel shortage circulating on social media are baseless and that adequate fuel is available in the country. Citizens have been advised not to panic and to use fuel responsibly.

Cut-off box – Shortage of domestic cylinders?
According to available information, there has been no change in domestic cylinder supply so far. However, reports suggest that the current stock may last only about 15–18 days. Gas agencies are unable to say what will happen after that period. If fresh supplies do not arrive, it could lead to difficulties for the public.
