The state tourism department, with support from the Union tourism ministry, is set to enhance key amenities at Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 initiative. This revamped version of the Centre’s tourism scheme emphasizes the development of sustainable tourism destinations, with Hampi being chosen among the selected sites.
According to Tourism Department Deputy Director Prabhulinga S Talakeri, Vijayanagara district’s DPR-1 (Detailed Project Report) for Hampi’s development has received approval in the initial phase, and the tender process is underway. All necessary No Objection Certificates (NOCs) have been obtained, and site inspections are complete. The estimated project cost for upgrading Hampi is ₹24 crore.
Deputy Commissioner M.S. Diwakar stated that the plan includes the creation of 20 Travellers’ Nooks, grouped into three themes, Imperial, Royal, and Noble. These hubs will be designed to enhance visitor experience through:
- Modern toilets and bathrooms
- Childcare facilities
- Seating and rest areas
- Improved signage and accessibility
The Travellers’ Nooks will be set up at major locations including:
Hampi Gram Panchayat parking, Vijaya Vittala Temple, Hosapete Railway Station, Krishna Temple, Chandrashekhar Temple, Sri Virupaksheshwara Temple, Tungabhadra Reservoir, KSRTC Bus Stand, Galemma Temple, Anjanadri Hills, Anegondi, Kamalapur, Kaddirampur, Lotus Mahal, Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Freedom Park, Bukkasagar, Jambunathaswamy Temple, Nagappa Temple, Kampa Bhupa Road, and Sasivekalu Ganesha Temple.
In addition, the administration plans to introduce ‘Dasoha’ (community feeding) for visitors and pilgrims. A ‘Prasada Mantap’ (community kitchen) reflecting Hampi’s heritage architecture will be constructed at a cost of ₹8 crore.
The structure will be located opposite the Hampi Gram Panchayat parking area. Sri Virupaksheshwara Temple CEO Hanumanthappa prepared the DPR, and the ASI has granted permission for construction, which is expected to begin soon.
Hampi draws thousands of tourists and devotees daily, with large gatherings during festivals and full moon days. Many face difficulties in accessing meals, prompting the Hindu Religious Endowments Department to propose a system for free meal distribution under the DC’s supervision.
Officials believe these infrastructure upgrades will significantly boost Hampi’s appeal as a leading tourist destination.
