Permanent boating services are set to start at Kamalapur Lake, one of Hampi’s prime attractions built by the Vijayanagara kings, with operations likely to begin around December 6.
Suresh Naik of Honnavar in Uttara Kannada district has come forward to run the boating facility, and the Hampi World Heritage Site Management Authority (HWMA) has approved. As per the agreement, revenue will be shared in an 80:20 ratio between the boat operator and HWMA, which will shift to 75:25 if the monthly income crosses ₹5 lakh.
Solar-battery boats: Initially, one 8-seater and one 16-seater solar-powered boat will be introduced. Both are currently being built at the Karwar port and are expected to reach Kamalapur Lake in four to five days. These boats will use solar panels and stored battery power, in line with new norms that prohibit petrol and diesel boats.
“Two boats will operate here permanently. A jetty will be built near a small temple on the lake’s edge, and a floating jetty will be set up at the centre of the lake for activities like kitty parties. More boats may be added depending on tourist response. The contracted operator will decide the ticket rates, but they are yet to be finalised,” HWMA Commissioner Ramesh Vatagal told reporters.
