The approval from the Central Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) to grant mining leases in three districts, including Ballari, for C-category mining has raised concerns among activists. Ballari has received the highest number of these leases among the districts, with more than 12 mining companies currently operating in the Sandur mining area, accounting for nearly 35 MMT of ongoing mining activities.
Activists are expressing apprehension that increased mining in the region may have detrimental effects on the health of local residents and pose a threat to ASI-protected monuments. They argue that the government’s focus on revenue generation appears to take precedence over the preservation of natural resources.
Srishail Aladhahalli, an activist from Sandur taluk, emphasized the community’s concerns following the FAC’s authorization of C-category mining in the three districts, including Chitradurga and Tumakuru. Ballari has long been associated with mining activities, with an annual allowance of nearly 40 MMT of mining, including approximately 30 C-category leases in operation. Aladhahalli recalled an incident from a few years ago when an ASI-protected temple within a reserve forest area suffered damage due to mining activities, affecting over 15 villages located in the vicinity.
The adverse impact of mining on the health of villagers and local wildlife has been a recurring issue, and activists are expressing worry over the government’s perceived lack of action and neglect in addressing these concerns.
