Ballari Hospital faces criticism for emergency surgery done using phone flashlight amid power cut

A relative of the patient, who had been stitched up, shared that the person was rushed to the hospital following an accident. Following the recent shock of five maternal deaths at BIMS, the government’s Super Speciality Trauma Centre in Ballari has found itself in the news for all the wrong reasons.

The emergency ward experienced a sudden power outage for about 15 minutes on Thursday evening. This forced doctors treating an accident victim to use a mobile phone’s flashlight to stitch up the wound, creating panic at the hospital.

Public dissatisfaction is growing, with accusations of poor maintenance and staff shortages, prompting calls for strict action against the authorities.

The hospital, a joint initiative by the state and Union governments, opened two years ago, and has faced multiple complaints since its inception.

The relative of the patient explained that around 7 pm, a sudden power cut hit the emergency ward, but there seemed to be little concern over the disruption. “The doctors came and stitched up the wound using a smartphone torchlight,” the relative said.

“The power outage lasted for about 15-20 minutes, and we saw patients on ventilators struggling for breath. This highlights the everyday challenges faced by government hospital staff. We urge both the state and central governments to take action against such negligence,” they added, emphasizing, “The government spends significant amounts on doctors’ salaries, but some fail to provide adequate care. We hope this situation doesn’t happen again.”
