Ballari district logs over 58,000 traffic violations in 2024, collects ₹2.85 crore in fines

The Ballari District Police Department has taken a firm stance against traffic violations, recording 58,375 cases in 2024 and collecting fines amounting to ₹2,85,58,000. With the district’s population expanding across its five taluks, vehicle ownership has surged, with most households now owning at least one vehicle, primarily two-wheelers. This vehicle increase has intensified traffic density, leading to frequent violations as drivers prioritize urgency over safety.

To address these challenges, the police department has ramped up enforcement while also conducting awareness programs to promote adherence to traffic rules. However, accidents caused by driver negligence remain a persistent issue.

In 2024, traffic police intensified their crackdown, leading to significant penalties. The data reveals 852 cases of drunk driving, resulting in fines of ₹38.88 lakh, while ₹12.13 lakh was collected from 1,128 speeding cases. Fines from helmet violations amounted to ₹32,78,500 from 6,557 cases, and ₹36,75,000 was imposed on 7,350 cases of not wearing seatbelts. Signal violations accounted for ₹4.3 lakh from 860 cases, while ₹5.95 lakh came from 622 cases of speeding.

Other significant fines included ₹7,15,500 from 1,433 cases of using high beams, ₹33,12,800 from 16,312 cases of overloading passengers, ₹5,01,300 from 2,381 cases involving passengers in goods vehicles, ₹14,42,500 from 2,882 no-entry violations, and ₹22,09,500 from 4,419 cases of failing to wear uniforms. Additional violations contributed ₹26,95,400.

Superintendent of Police Dr. V.J. Shobharani reaffirmed the department’s commitment to enforcing traffic regulations and raising public awareness. “While we are taking measures to register violations and impose fines, ensuring road safety ultimately depends on every motorist strictly following traffic rules,” she said.

Despite these measures, traffic violations in the district continue to rise. There are increasing concerns about individuals using political or influential connections to evade fines, leaving traffic police feeling constrained in enforcing the law.
