A recent archaeological discovery in a remote village deep within the Nallamala forests has revealed a remarkable connection to the Vijayanagara Empire, offering fresh evidence of how far the influence of Hampi once extended across South India. The findings, which include inscriptions and historical remains linked to the Vijayanagara period, were uncovered in a forested region located more than 300 kilometres from Hampi, the empire’s capital.
The discovery is drawing attention from historians because it highlights the enormous geographical reach of a kingdom that flourished between the 14th and 16th centuries. Today, Hampi in Karnataka is celebrated for its magnificent temples, bazaars, royal enclosures, and monuments that stand as reminders of the empire’s glory. However, the latest discovery suggests that the kingdom’s presence was felt far beyond the Tungabhadra River basin and deep into the rugged forests of present-day Andhra Pradesh.
For historians, the significance lies not just in the artefacts themselves but in their location. The Nallamala forests are among the most remote and difficult-to-access regions in southern India. Finding evidence of Vijayanagara-era activity in such an area indicates that the empire maintained connections with settlements located hundreds of kilometres from its political centre.
