A shocking incident from Karnataka has once again brought the issue of excessive mobile gaming addiction among teenagers into the spotlight. An 18-year-old pre-university student allegedly stabbed his father, mother, and elder sister following a dispute over his online gaming habits, resulting in the deaths of his father and sister while leaving his mother critically injured.
The incident occurred in Hosa Ayodhya village of Gangavathi taluk in Koppal district on Saturday night. According to police, the teenager had developed an intense addiction to online mobile games. Family members had repeatedly advised him to reduce the time spent on gaming and focus on his studies and daily responsibilities. Investigators believe a heated argument broke out at the family home after the parents once again confronted the teenager about his gaming habits. During the altercation, the youth allegedly attacked his father, 48-year-old Yankanna Naidu, mother Soujanya, and elder sister Pragati with a knife. His father and sister succumbed to their injuries, while his mother was rushed to hospital in critical condition. Reports also indicate that the accused later injured himself.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves across Karnataka, particularly in Koppal district, where residents are struggling to comprehend how a disagreement over mobile gaming could escalate into such extreme violence. Police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Mental health experts have long warned that excessive online gaming can lead to behavioural changes, social isolation, aggression, sleep disorders, and emotional instability when left unchecked. While millions of young people engage in gaming as a form of entertainment, specialists stress the importance of healthy screen-time limits, parental supervision, and timely counselling when warning signs emerge.
The Koppal tragedy serves as a grim reminder that digital addiction is no longer just a lifestyle concern but a growing social challenge. Experts say parents, educators, and communities must work together to identify unhealthy gaming patterns early and provide support before they spiral into serious psychological and behavioural issues. As the investigation continues, the incident has reignited conversations about digital wellbeing, youth mental health, and the urgent need for awareness regarding online gaming addiction in Indian households.
