Tungabhadra Dam gets expert review for crest gate installation

An expert committee visited the Tungabhadra Dam in Hosapete on Tuesday to review the installation of new crest gates at the reservoir. The committee, formed by the Tungabhadra Board, includes members from the central government and the three states sharing the river.

The panel has been tasked with overseeing the installation of these gates, addressing several critical issues, including finalizing the number of gates to be installed before the rainy season, according to Raghavendra, TB Dam section officer. “Once the committee finalizes the number of gates, the next steps will be determined,” he added.

A temporary gate has already been set up at crest gate number 19, with plans for a permanent structure. Work on installing new gates at other locations is ongoing. The dam has also been visited by a team from the National Dam Safety Authority of India on December 8 and a five-member team from the Structural Engineering Research Institute on December 21.

The committee, led by former Central Water Board chief engineer R K Shivarajan, includes former BHPC managing engineer S P Mukherjee and Karnataka Technical Sub-Committee head S P Siddagangappa.
