Authorities in Bellary district have identified 12,950 ineligible BPL (Below Poverty Line) ration cards, and the cancellation process is underway. Additionally, 1,772 cards belonging to income tax-paying families have been upgraded to APL (Above Poverty Line).
Statewide, 13,133 BPL cards held by income taxpayers, government employees, and families earning over ₹1.2 lakh annually have been flagged under the family welfare program. Of these, 183 cards have already been canceled, with the remaining 12,950 are being processed.
In Bellary taluk, 5,431 ineligible BPL cards were identified, with 21 canceled. Similarly, in Bellary Rural, 22 out of 1,883 cards were canceled, Kampli saw 83 out of 1,242 cards revoked, Kurugodu had 14 out of 348 cards nullified, Sandur canceled 37 out of 2,775, and Siruguppa revoked 6 out of 1,454 cards. Among these, 71 cards held by government employees were canceled and converted to APL status. Data from the Food and Civil Supplies Department reveals the breakdown: Bellary taluk (30), Bellary Rural (6), Kampli (5), Kurugodu (3), Sandur (14), and Siruguppa (13).
Between 2021 and 2024, 2,813 ineligible individuals held BPL cards, leading to fines totaling ₹23,54,87 being collected from them.
Cancellation of Deceased Cardholders
The Food and Civil Supplies Department has also canceled 3,576 BPL cards issued in the names of deceased individuals across the district. In Bellary taluk alone, 1,556 such cards were revoked, followed by Kampli (341), Kurugodu (282), Sandur (589), and Siruguppa (808).
Verification Process
“We have suspended the cards of those who have not collected rations for six months. These cases are under verification, and eligible cardholders will be reinstated,” said Sakina, Deputy Director of the Food and Civil Supplies Department. A total of 12,950 ineligible cards have been identified, with food inspectors conducting further checks. Challenges have also emerged in cases where Aadhaar linking caused issues, for which a report has been submitted to the government.
Suspended Cards
The government has suspended 7,488 ration cards in the district due to inactivity over six months. Cardholders can reactivate their cards by submitting the required documentation. In Bellary taluk alone, 3,565 BPL cards have been inactive for six months.
As of April, the district had 2,69,134 BPL cards. This year, 18,848 new applications were submitted, with 14,471 reviewed, resulting in the issuance of 8,966 new cards.
