Ten people travelling in a tractor from Bavihalli were rescued after the vehicle got stuck in the Tungabhadra river in Vijayanagara district. The incident took place near Navali village in Hoovinahadagali taluk when the driver attempted to cross the river instead of using a nearby bridge.
The group was heading to the Singatalur Veerabhadreshwara temple fair and reportedly chose the river route to avoid delays. The driver assured them it was safe as the water level appeared low. However, midway through the crossing, strong currents and rising water levels caused the driver to lose control, leaving the tractor stranded and partially submerged.
Fishermen who noticed the incident rushed to the spot and rescued all 10 people using a coracle. The tractor was later pulled out with the help of an excavator.
Witnesses and locals criticised the driver’s decision to ignore the safer bridge route. One of the rescued devotees said they were hesitant but agreed after the driver’s assurance, adding that they felt fortunate and thanked the fishermen for their timely help. No serious injuries were reported.
